The 3-Stage Journey Flow
Stage 1: The Mountain Descent & Observation Point
Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Kandy as we head east toward the Knuckles foothills. Reaching the top of the 18 Bends Road, we pause at the main observation deck for sweeping views of the eastern plains and the Mahaweli River basin. Your driver then expertly navigates the legendary hairpin turns as the climate shifts from cool highlands to warm, lush lowland forests.
Stage 2: The Jungle Water-Trail & Giant Cascades
Arriving in Hasalaka, we step onto the trail for a gentle walk along a historic irrigation canal bordered by emerald-green paddy fields. Venturing into the forest, we first discover Kaluwa Watuna Ella, a hidden 30-meter gem nestled inside a quiet canopy. Pushing deeper into the woods, we reach the majestic Rathna Ella. Towering 101 meters high, the sheer force of the water creates a powerful wind and cool, refreshing mist across the rocky gorge.
Stage 3: The Village Feast & Journey Home
We trace our steps back along the canal path out of the forest zone to arrive at a rustic local setting. Here, enjoy an authentic Sri Lankan village-style feast cooked over an open wood fire in clay pots—featuring fresh organic vegetables, lake fish, and traditional red rice. Refreshed by the feast and mountain waters, we climb back up the scenic pass and transfer you comfortably back to your hotel by late afternoon.
What to Pack in Your Daypack
Footwear: Sturdy trainers or hiking shoes with good traction (jungle paths and boulders can be wet and slick).
Clothing: Lightweight, breathable clothing and a fresh change of clothes for after the trek.
Towel & Protection: A small, quick-dry travel towel to dry off from the heavy waterfall mist, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and a raincoat.
